Raise guide

Why it's not the full raise

A raise is taxed at your top rates: federal income tax withholding, 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare (Social Security stops at $184,500 of wages in 2026), and state income tax where it applies. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions lower the income tax part.

Withholding vs. annual tax

This page shows paycheck withholding, the IRS Pub 15-T method your employer uses. Your annual tax liability on your return can differ: the 0.9% Additional Medicare tax is withheld over $200,000 for everyone but owed over $250,000 if you're married filing jointly, and the 2025-law tips, overtime and senior deductions are annual tax only unless you file a new W-4.

What it does not include

Local taxes that aren't modeled (for example Pennsylvania local earned income tax and the Local Services Tax outside Philadelphia) are labelled "not included" and left out, never shown as $0. Married filing separately, W-4 Step 2 and Step 4 entries, bonuses and credits aren't modeled. Graduated-bracket states use one planning rate and are labelled approximate.

Why didn't my paycheck go up by the full raise?

Each extra dollar of pay also raises federal income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare and, in most states, state income tax withholding. The math table shows how much of the raise each one takes.

Is this my tax bill or my withholding?

It's paycheck withholding: what your employer takes out each check. Your annual tax bill on your return can be different, for example because of credits, other income, or the 2025-law tips, overtime and senior deductions.

Why does a raise over $200k change Medicare?

Employers withhold an extra 0.9% Medicare tax on wages over $200,000 for every filing status. Your year-end Additional Medicare tax depends on filing status ($250,000 married filing jointly) and can differ.
